Sleeping with the lights on causes poor night’s sleep

How do you sleep at night? Do you keep the lights on? If you have the lights on, you are increasing the chances of a worse sleep that could affect your hormones and metabolism. There was a study done before that when you sleep with the lights on, you could get fatter. Now, there are studies that prove that light can actually affect your sleep. Sleeping with lights on can lower melatonin levels. This is a sleep hormone that enables the body to sleep and slumber.

Aside from melatonin studies, the sleeping patterns of a person can be linked to particular kinds of cancers as well as diabetes and blood pressure. If you are working in erratic work schedules, you are decreasing your melatonin levels. The lifestyles of people might have been able to move across from day to night or night to day. However, the physiological side of our selves is contradicting such aspects.

There is actually a part of the body that is affected by the time of day and that is the pineal gland that creates melatonin. When night time comes, the pineal gland manufactures the said hormone. When the lights are switched on, the body stops the creation of melatonin.

They were there for 5 days and they are awake for 16 hours and asleep for 8 hours. In the initial tests, the participants are exposed to lights for 16 hours and are switched to dimmer lights when night time comes. When the lights are turned on, the melatonin levels decrease. The study shows that in dim or no light, the melatonin levels are more prominent with 90 more minutes of hormone manufacture every day.

Melatonin has a very critical role to body regulatory processes. This hormone can help maintain the blood pressure, glucose levels and the body temperature. If light is always on, we are increasing the chances of gaining one kind of cancer as well as risking diabetes. This means that for people who are afraid of the dark, there is more to be afraid when you keep the light on. It can cause a lot more havoc to the body than you could ever imagine. For shift workers, it is critical to be aware of these pieces of information.

We all think that light is an essential aspect of life but in this case, darkness is also a very important factor to the health equation. There is an actual link to the past studies for obesity and sleeping with lights on and the melatonin. Glucose levels can be affected and this could trigger a more dangerous effect to the body when you wake up. It is time to reconsider your sleeping habits and look at the dark as a healthy way of having a rest. Sleep tight with a dim room and enjoy the great benefits of a more relaxing slumber at the end of the day.
